Round Leicester Relay - Sunday, 28th September 2008, start 8.30am

THIS YEARS RELAY WILL BE ON
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 28th

Welcome to the 2008 Round Leicester Relay. This years race will be a little later than ususl due to my trip to the Bejing Olympics, for many years I have been urged to stage the race a little later to avoid the hottest part of the year, so here we have the opportunity to give it a go!

Hopefully we will have better conditions for running, so bringing faster times, and avoiding the holiday period will hopefully bring us some extra teams.

As far as is know at this early stage - there will be no route changes, but keep a look out in case there are any issues that crop up over the ensusing months.

The route this year is almost identical to last years except LEG K which will have to be changed due to ongoing problems with the landowner at Nailstone with regard to us using a public footpath on his land. Last year he was “checking his field” with his Rottwieller “which was alarmed” by two runners (20 minutes apart) and proceeded to bite both runners, as well as intimidate quite a few others. He also put in a claim for compensation for distress to his dog…… ah the joys of being a race organiser. LEG K will be reworked probably as a fixed leg as soon as I can sort it out.

PLEASE INFORM YOUR RUNNERS THAT THEY SHOULD NOT ASSUME THE SAME ROUTE AS LAST YEAR ON LEG K – THERE IS A RISK OF RUNNERS BEING PUT IN DANGER!!!

Many thanks again to Mick T who has done such a splendid job on the maps – I hope that you continue to find them useful.

The race grows more and more popular year by year and this in turn brings its problems, with parking, vehicles on the road etc. Please on the day remember to park responsibly and avoid any visits by the police on the way. This is particularly important in the villages that we use, last year we had complaints from the residents of LODDINGTON. Please treat property with respect… and be careful where you wee…

I always look forward to the relay and what I describe as “Leicestershire’s celebration of running” , personally I think it is always wonderful to see clubs competing against each other and doing their competitive best to beat each other but at the same time encouraging and helping each other along the way.

Just to reiterate the changes that were initiated last year…..

RUNNERS DROPPING OUT - A team may continue in the race having had a runner drop out due to injury etc, the runner on that leg will be given the slowest recorded time for the leg PLUS ONE SECOND. The runner on the following leg will start with the last runner except of course on a re-start leg.

TEAMS now must consist of 13 different runners, we will as usual, in the interests of inclusiveness allow runners to double up if it is an "odds and sods" team or if it is a "non competitive" B team. MIXED TEAMS can now consist of a minimum of 5 men or 5 women.

RESTART TIMES will be 10.45 - 1.30 - 3.45 and 5pm This should allow the race to catch up with itself a little easier- Note the earlier start time as well!

PARKING AT THE START/ FINISH - So as not to upset the residents of Bewcastle Grove. There will be NO PARKING on the street. The car park at the rear of the school will be opened.

SUBSTITUTE RUNNER We will allow one substitute runner per team. This must be declared as soon as possible to a race official. The substitute must be an undeclared runner, and must not be taken from any other team.

If you need any clarification of the new rules let me know - Also if you see any problems with, for example roadworks, on the route also let me know.

The Round Leicester Relay course starts and finishes at the Tudor Centre, Mowmacre Hill, Border Drive, Leicester, LE4 2JE, (Click here for a map).

I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON AUGUST 5th !!
